The All People’s Congress (APC) founder, Hassan Ayariga, has supported claims made by the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has instituted measures to ensure no force rises against it in the impending general elections in 2024.

On September 28, 2023, Mr. Ayariga appeared on the Class Morning Show and spoke.

In support of the opposition NDC’s assertions that the current administration will have the support of the EC, security services, and courts before the 2024 elections, Mr. Ayariga said: “I think that there’s some iota of truth in it.”

“So they (NDC) know what they’re talking about that anytime they are all in power they keep changing the Electoral Commission to their own and why would you keep changing an Electoral Commissioner every time your party was in power and so I would even say that the Electoral Commissioner should not be elected by the President of the day, we should have a constitution that makes them independent. None of their commissioners should be elected by the president or appointed by the president,” Mr Ayariga stated.

Mr. Ayariga hinted at the NDC’s claim by saying: “Because when the smaller political parties decided to go to court and we got the injunction application against the Electoral Commission, you saw what happened, it was thrown to the dustbin [from conducting the limited voter registration exercise].” Because it is obvious what it means that the Chief Justice did not wish to hear such an application you cannot simply refute the NDC’s assertions because they themselves have made them in the past.

In order to ensure that no government has the authority to choose an electoral commissioner, the APC leader suggested that the Constitution be amended.

“Those allegations the NDC has put out there there’s some iota of truth in it” he said.

Mr. Ayariga highlighted the detrimental effects of presidents having to appoint electoral commissioners by revealing that in the Dome Kwabenya Constituency, where he lives, despite having his driver and other friends vote for him, he was reported to have had no votes because the EC recorded none for him.

He cast a vote for me while he was standing there, but when the votes were tallied, I received not a single one. He, his wife, and friends from my neighborhood also cast ballots, but I received none. My agent was present when the votes were counted, and I was given the number; nevertheless, when they recorded the results, I received zero.
