Ghanaian Rotational nurses and midwives have expressed their anguish and despair after 11 months of unpaid national service allowances.
Mavis Akoto Frimpong, the secretary of the Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association (RNMA), stated in an interview that the matter has not been resolved despite numerous discussions with the Ministry of Health and the previous government.
She vehemently urged President John Dramani Mahama and the current Health Minister to act immediately, calling the situation “dire” and “unsustainable.”
“We have done everything necessary to get our allowances paid, but to no avail,” she lamented.
“For nearly a year, we’ve worked tirelessly in hospitals and health facilities across the country without any financial support. It’s unfair and discouraging.”
She emphasized that many of her coworkers are fighting for their lives as they near the end of their 12-month mandated national service and further urged stakeholders and pertinent authorities to assist them.
“Some of us are unable to afford transportation to work. We can’t feed ourselves properly, and sadly, even our parents have given up on us because they are overwhelmed,” she added.
By highlighting that the ongoing disregard for rotational nurses and midwives could discourage aspiring medical professionals and have an impact on the standard of healthcare delivery nationwide, the RNMA is urging immediate attention to the issue.
