Seven radio stations nationwide have been forced to close by Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation.
“The decision was made to enforce adherence to national security requirements and broadcasting regulations,” he said.
“Today, in two separate cases, I have directed the National Communications Authority Ghana to suspend and enforce a prohibition of broadcast on seven (7) radio stations in total,” the Minister explained in a Facebook post on Tuesday, February 18.
He clarified that six stations were discovered to be operating without a proper frequency authorization, while one station was taken down for national security reasons.
The enforcement comes after a recent frequency assessment, the Minister added.
Samuel Nartey George emphasized that the instruction will go into force right away and that more action would likely be taken in the days ahead. “Enforcement of the directive is immediate. Further action would be taken in the coming days,” he said.
The Minister advised all media outlets to closely follow the terms of their frequency licenses, reaffirming his commitment to media control.
“Once again, I reiterate my commitment to sanitising our airwaves and ensuring strict adherence to the law concerning frequency authorisations. I urge all media houses to ensure they are complying with ALL the terms of their frequency authorisations,” he added.
