The leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has urged Ghanaians to hold New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs responsible at the polls following their absence at a recalled parliamentary session on Thursday, November 7.
Citing that Parliament lacked the necessary quorum for decision-making due to the NPP MPs’ absence, Speaker Alban Bagbin adjourned the House indefinitely.
In order to address pressing national issues, the NPP had requested that the recall session be held. The NDC caucus, however, strongly criticized its MPs for not showing up for the session.
Dr. Ato Forson denounced the NPP MPs’ absence during a press conference after the adjournment, claiming that the state had suffered a large financial loss as a result of the expenses paid to gather members for the special session.
Dr. Ato Forson emphasized that the recall procedure entails significant costs, such as taxpayer-funded travel and operational expenses, which he claimed were squandered because the NPP MPs were not present.
He asked voters to take this incident into account when casting their ballots in the upcoming election, seeing it as a sign of subpar leadership.
Dr. Ato Forson urged Ghanaians to “sanction” the NPP lawmakers by voting them out at the polls, emphasizing the significance of accountability.
He urged people to demand accountable leadership that prioritizes the smooth operation of Parliament and respects public resources.
“I am deeply concerned and disturbed by what has happened and this is an abuse of the Standing Orders of the House. It is tantamount to causing financial loss to the state and we call on Ghanaians to punish them accordingly. They are short of ideas on solving the issues of the country and all that they know is dancing during their campaigns and sharing money.”
“Let no one deceive you that the NDC is here to distract government business because there is no business. We are fed up and we are just waiting for the elections so that Ghanaians can vote out this incompetent government,” Dr Ato Forson said.
