IMANI Africa and Professor Kwesi Aning filed an appeal for an injunction to prevent President Mahama from dismissing the Inspector General of Police (IGP), but the Supreme Court dismissed it.
The court decided that the matter was moot in a decision made by a five-member panel led by Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie. Justice Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized that the President is still able to carry with his administrative and public duties even though the substantive matter is scheduled for judgment on May 7.
The president’s acts did not amount to an excess of judicial authority, the court clarified.
IMANI and Professor Aning, a security analyst, had filed the injunction to prevent the nomination of a new IGP.
Kofi Bentil, speaking on behalf of IMANI Africa, contended during today’s proceedings that the court lacked the authority for dismissing the IGP.
Principal State Attorney Adjoa Obeng replied that an injunction could not stop an activity that had already occurred and requested that the application be dismissed.
