The National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has urged the Electoral Commission to make sure that the next general elections are held in a free, fair, and transparent way.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang addressed concerns regarding the recent limited registration and voter transfer activities, which were tainted by violent episodes. She emphasized the significance of putting policies in place to stop similar situations from happening in the future.
“Ghana’s democracy has over the years been the envy of many countries due to its nature of organising free and fair elections but the violence that characterised the country’s elections in recent times is worrying,” she stated.
She made these comments as part of a one-day tour of the Abuakwa North Constituency in the Eastern Region, during a courtesy call on Osabarima Adusei Peasah IV, the Chief of Akyem Tafo.
In order to guarantee a peaceful election, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also advised traditional leaders to participate actively in the process and to express their concerns.
She urged the Electoral Commission to set up the proper processes for a fair election and to serve as an impartial referee.
Chief Osabarima Adusei Peasah IV, in turn, reiterated these views and expressed optimism that Ghana’s election of a female vice president would mark a historic occasion.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s long academic career was emphasized by him as a significant suit for her prospective vice presidential position.
In order to ensure free and fair elections, the Chief further emphasized how crucial it is that the Electoral Commission treat all political parties fairly.
Chief Osabarima Adusei Peasah IV also bemoaned the region’s agricultural sector’s downturn, citing the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana’s (CRIG) initiatives in particular.
If the NDC wins the general elections on December 7, he pleaded with them to revitalize this vital sector.
This was stated in a statement signed by James Agyenim-Boateng, the spokesperson for the running mate’s campaign, and dated Thursday, June 27, 2024.
