In the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries, a faction within the party known as Grassroots Delegates in the Ashanti Region has vowed to cast out Members of Parliament (MPs) who are pressuring grassroots delegates to support Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

On Thursday, March 16, 2023, Mr. Frederick Owusu, an Executive Member of the group, claimed that some of the Lawmakers had accepted sizable amounts of money from Dr. Bawumia and had been pressuring the grassroots representatives to vote for him.

He claimed that because of their local interests, these Lawmakers accompany Dr. Bawumia to funerals rather than carrying out their primary legislative duties.

He clarified that these Lawmakers have also been instilling fear in the delegates by warning them that they will loose their voting privileges within the party if they do not support the Vice President.

“We the Grassroots Delegates want to send a strong signal to those Members of Parliament to desist from such campaign moves. We want to state it unequivocally without any shred of doubt that, we the grassroots delegates stand united behind a presidential candidate who have message of hope for teeming unemployed youth and the good people of Ghana”.

In addition to denouncing the circumstance, Mr. Owusu urged such Lawmakers to let the representatives make their own decisions or risk being ousted in the parliamentary primary.

He emphasized to the aforementioned Lawmakers that the representatives have consciences and won’t be intimidated by such vile threats.

“We cannot afford to lose 2024 general election,we want to tell those MPs that they should not break the party before we all break the ‘8’ they have grossly betrayed the mandate of we the grassroots. These made us believed they are unifiers not knowing they are divisive and also after their stomachs.Their bellies are full and bent to protect their jobs and other contracts” Mr Owusu stated.
