Hon. Mmamoloko Kubayi (MP), the Minister of Human Settlements for South Africa, paid a visit to Francis Asenso-Boakye (MP), the Minister of Works and Housing, today as part of the ongoing efforts between Ghana and South Africa to investigate options and come up with creative solutions for the numerous problems in the areas of housing delivery and human settlements.

The South African Minister is in the nation on a formal visit as part of initiatives to deepen bilateral relations, forge new directions, and look at opportunities for working together on housing delivery and the growth of other human settlements.

Minister Kubayi’s visit follows productive previous discussions between the two sector ministers in South Africa and Poland, which established the necessity of looking into possible collaborations, especially with regard to strengthening the institutional frameworks for housing delivery in both nations.

Minister Kubayi was greeted by Sector Minister Francis Asenso-Boakye, who stated that the visit would not only help to deepen the relationship between Ghana and South Africa but would also, more significantly, lay the groundwork for future collaborations in the housing sector between the two nations. This collaboration would focus on improving the institutional frameworks for housing delivery in each nation.

Recognizing the common challenges towards addressing the housing needs of people, Asenso-Boakye said the complexities will require not only urgent attention, but also innovative solutions dictated by mutual commitments from governments.

“Our joint efforts in pressing issues of slum upgrading, improvement of informal settlements and the lives of those who inhabit them can have profound impact on the well-being and living conditions of a significant portion of our populations.”  Ghana’s sector Minister noted.

In her remarks, Minister Kubayi said the government of South Africa is ready to commit to the new partnership that will work out to resolve the many myriads of problems in housing delivery.

“To us, this partnership and commitments also include sharing of experiences, knowledge and best practices in the housing sectors of our countries and how we can practicalize the implementations of what we seek to commit” Minister Kubayi added.

In addition to other engagements, Minister Kubayi and her entourage are anticipated to meet with President H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Of particular note is a business session that will be arranged by the Ghana Investments Promotion Centre (GIPC) for participants in the housing industry from both nations.
