Spain rightly won the Women’s World Cup final in Sydney, prolonging England’s wait for its first championship.
The Lionesses, hoping to become the first senior English team to win the World Cup since the men’s team in 1966, were heartbroken after losing to a Spanish team that possessed flare and originality.
After dealing with a final corner kick in the 14th minute of tense stoppage time, Spain celebrated within their penalty area as England’s players collapsed to their knees in tears at the final whistle.
In the first half, Olga Carmona, the captain of Spain, scored the game’s winning goal by putting the ball past England’s Mary Earps after Lucy Bronze lost possession of the ball in midfield.
Lauren James and Chloe Kelly were introduced by England manager Sarina Wiegman at halftime, but Spain maintained control despite the Lionesses’ best efforts. Wiegman has now lost two consecutive World Cup finals.
One of the most impressive saves made by Earps, who took home the Golden Glove for best goalkeeper in the competition, came in the second half from the penalty spot to stop Jenni Hermoso.
After a thorough video assistant referee assessment, the penalty for handball against midfielder Keira Walsh was given. The Manchester United goalkeeper raced quickly to her left and saved Hermoso’s shot.
The European champions, though, went too far and lost just their second game in two years under Wiegman.
Despite entering the competition under a cloud of controversy due to a conflict between players and the Spanish football federation, Spain is named winner for the first time.
