On Thursday, November 7, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has called a crucial meeting of Parliament to discuss pressing national issues.
In line with Standing Orders 5 and 53 and Article 112(3) of the Constitution, which give the Speaker the power to call a meeting of Parliament when it is in the public interest, the recall was announced on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
The meeting will start at 10 a.m. at the Accra International Conference Centre, where legislative operations have been temporarily relocated while the main chamber is being renovated.
Although the precise agenda is yet unknown, the timing suggests the seriousness of the matters up for parliamentary consideration.
Speaker Bagbin’s decision to postpone Parliament indefinitely on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, in response to growing disagreements about parliamentary majority representation, is what prompted this recall.
As members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) fought for control of the House, the session turned heated.
Speaker Bagbin was recently ordered by the Supreme Court to postpone the implementation of his decision to declare four seats vacant.
In addition, the Supreme Court upheld its original ruling on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, rejecting Speaker Bagbin’s request to stop the order, thus escalating the legal difficulties as Parliament gets ready to meet again.
