Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has been accused by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership of using an authoritarian style to frighten the House’s minority members.

The party claims that the suspension of three of its MPs in the wake of the disarray during the vetting process last week is intolerable and threatens their capacity to keep the administration responsible.

“The party views this selective and autocratic posture of the Speaker as dangerous, with these actions packaged to cow the minority into submission, consequently weakening its potential to hold the government accountable,” the party said in a press statement released on Monday, February 3.

The suspension of the four MPs—three from the NPP and one from the NDC—was only formally addressed by the party following a news conference held in Parliament today, Monday, February 3, on the same issue.
