A crucial meeting was convened by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Management and Board members and Organized Labor members to deliberate on the sale of 60 percent of certain hotels’ shares to Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture.

Following the May 30 meeting, Elizabeth Ohene, the Chairperson of the SSNIT Board, informed the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Secretary General, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, that SSNIT is still seeking input before moving further with any agreements.

“SSNIT it has not sold 60 percent shares to the Minister of Agric,” according to reports citing Madam Elizabeth Ohene.

Dr. Yaw Baah has stated that the SSNIT will not permit the sale of the four hotels, regardless of whether it is seeking opinions or not.

He claimed that the board chairperson made an effort to persuade them regarding the selling deal. But the leaders of labour criticized the decision, stating that the hotels cannot be sold to the Minister of Agric.

According to Dr. Baah, the Board Chairperson was notified by Organized Labor to call a stakeholder meeting to address additional issues pertaining to SSNIT.

The stakeholder meeting, according to Dr. Baah, will cover more subjects.

“We have advised that they should cancel any meeting and convene a stakeholders’ forum, there are number of issues that have come up about SSNIT and let’s take them one after the other.

“More importantly we want to work together as stakeholders – Organised Labour, employers, SSNIT Board and government to ensure that their investments in SSNIT is sustainable so that whosever will retire will have no doubt in their minds,” he stated.

Dr. Baah reaffirmed their choice to speak with President Akufo-Addo on issues concerning SSNIT.

“If you recall that on May Day, we requested a meeting with the President, to give that space for us to discuss SSNIT issues, but we have received a letter from the Minister of Employment so we will meet him,” Dr Baah stated.
