Former Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani, who served under former President John Agyekum Kufuor, has said that the National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) should lead the party’s current “Thank you tour” rather than a candidate hoping to run for flagbearership in the upcoming election.
Mr. Mpiani has criticized the tour, which is now being conducted by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer.
The NPP’s constitution states that the national chairman leads the party while it is in opposition until a convention is called to choose new offices, including the flagbearer.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Tuesday, April 29, Mr. Mpiani made the following argument in response to the tour: “If the chairman is the leader, then he should be the face of this tour, not a candidate who may want to contest again, along with others who may also be planning to stand.”
Additionally, he criticized the tour as an inappropriate priority and asked what Dr. Bawumia was expressing gratitude to the public for.
In light of Prof. Mike Oquaye’s analysis on the NPP’s loss in the 2024 elections, Mr. Mpiani has since urged the party to halt the current tour.
He said that instead of going on another national tour, the party should focus on the issues that caused their defeat.
