Minority leader in Parliament, Dr. Ato Forson has described the ongoing Suame Interchange as a sham by the NPP government to win votes from people in Ashanti.

Speaking on the Otec fm’s afternoon political talkshow Dwabrem, Dr. Ato Forson revealed that there has been no contract agreement brought to the parliament house for approval.

He however challenged the NPP to provide documentation which proves there is indeed a contract for the project.

“The Suame Interchange is just to win votes from Ashanti. Let me tell you this, there hasn’t been any approval from parliament for the project” he told host Dok. Cash.

The project, which is in two phases is expected to ease traffic congestion, travel time as well as safety through a reduction in road accidents when completed.

The first phase comprises a four-tier interchange at Suame, an overpass at Krofrom Junction, an underpass at Abrepo Junction and the widening of sections of the ring road.

Phase two will see the construction of overpasses at Anomangye Junction, Magazine New Road Junction and Abusuakruwa Junction.

It also comes with 15 kilometres of local roads improvement of selected intersections and the widening of the Offinso Road into a three-lane dual carriageway.

Construction of the interchange is being undertaken by M/S Grupo Dizmar of Spain and Rango Construction Limited, a Ghanaian company, while the complementary road component will be undertaken wholly by a Ghanaian firm, Rango Construction Company Limited, with the supervision of the entire project being the responsibility of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, through the Department of Urban Roads.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, President Akufo-Addo said the interchange, with the complementary road project, would tremendously improve the traffic situation in the region and also reduce the perennial congestion experienced around the Suame Roundabout during peak time and improve urban mobility within the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area.

He tasked the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the contractors with making sure the nation got value for its money and that the completion dates were strictly adhered to.
