A six-week statewide gun amnesty has been declared by Ghana’s Minister of Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, in an effort to retrieve illicit firearms that have increasingly found their way into public areas such as schools, businesses, funerals, and festivals.
Speaking at a news conference in Accra on Tuesday, the Minister cautioned that an alarming increase in armed robberies, killings, and violent altercations nationwide has been caused by the proliferation of unregistered firearms.
During the gun amnesty, which is valid from December 1st, 2025, to January 15th, 2026, anyone in possession of an illegal or unregistered handgun can turn it in to specified security locations without worrying about being arrested or prosecuted.
The public is permitted to turn in unregistered firearms without being arrested or punished between December 1, 2025, and January 15, 2026. According to the Minister, anyone who hands up a firearm would be acknowledged as a patriot who contributes to Ghana’s security.
