The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has issued a warning to Ghanaian politicians, stating that they should take note of the recent events in Kenya, particularly as the nation gets ready for a pivotal election on December 7.

The Speaker urged politicians, especially members of Parliament, to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections, pointing out that the situation in Kenya is not all that dissimilar from Ghana’s.

In an effort to guarantee a peaceful election process, Mr. Bagbin said he has contacted important parties such as the chief justice, traditional leaders, and the chairs of the National Commission for Civic Education and the Electoral Commission. He also plans to speak with President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking to media in Kumasi, Bagbin emphasized the necessity of taking preventative action to protect Ghana’s democracy before the elections in 2024.

“People sometimes take so many things for granted including my colleagues in Parliament but we all can bear witness that what happened in Kenya is now in Tanzania it could be in Ghana and I am not saying it will be in Ghana.

“We are not different from our brothers and sisters in Kenya and so we have to take preemptive measures to prevent that from happening and so we must do all we can to make sure that the right person that Ghanaians want to lead the country, leads the country and so in this matter, I will do all I can so that nobody reads partisanship in whatever I do.”

The Speaker emphasized that Parliament and the media must work together, stating that this alliance is critical to the growth of the nation.

In order to ensure that the public is informed about the House’s actions, he pledged to do everything within his power to bring journalists and Parliament closer together.

Kingsley Hope, the Ghana Journalists Association’s Ashanti Regional President, commended the Speaker for interacting with the media.

He called this a first for Ghana’s history and said the association will continue to collaborate with governmental institutions for the advancement of the nation.
