Tamale Technical University students on rampage over poor infrastructure

Tamale Technical University (TaTU) students protested on Tuesday, September 16, calling for immediate enhancements to campus facilities and amenities as well as transparency about tuition paid over the years.

The demonstration, which happened on campus and in the streets nearby, was sparked by students’ mounting annoyance at what they say has been years of disregard from university administration.

Their main grievance is that, in spite of the monthly payment of a “developmental levy” that is part of student tuition, there has been no apparent progress.

Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Public Relations Officer Mahamudu Musah spoke to the audience and charged that the university’s administration was failing its students.

“We are hitting the street to demand accountability and developmental projects from management,” Musah stated.

“Over the years, students have paid their fees, and if you look at the fee structure, there is a component called the developmental levy. Students have paid this for years, but there hasn’t been a single project on this campus championed by management.”

Students expressed grave worries about the deteriorating sanitation in addition to the absence of infrastructure, characterizing the state as dangerous and intolerable.

One of the challenges that students have is sanitation. “The rate of open defecation is alarming,” one demonstrator stated.

Many students are now compelled to use the bush because there is now no adequate toilet for them. Sometimes the stench from the surrounding toilets is so bad that lecturers are forced to end classes early. Why does our university have to go through this?

Despite the peaceful start to the event, emotions later increased, leading to minor injuries. Three students were injured, two of whom suffered head injuries and one of whom suffered a leg injury, according to eye witnesses.
