A nationwide strike by three teacher unions is set to begin on Wednesday, March 20.

The Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT-Gh), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) make up the unions.

The unions announced their intention to begin industrial action on Wednesday, March 20, in a press release. They attributed this on the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education’s tardiness in resolving their terms of service.

They said that although the negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement were ongoing, they should be concluded by February 29, 2024, at the latest.

“Thus, the new Collective Agreement stands un-negotiated and we raised this concern in our letter to the Director General GES, dated February 29th, 2024 and also informed the National Labour Commission. As we gather here now, the issue is still outstanding,” part of the statement said.

The unions said that they had brought the lack of a functioning teacher service plan by the Ghana Education Service to the attention of the Director General of GES.

The unions maintained that all needs in the teaching profession will be met by a “cogent and appropriate” scheme.

The unions also emphasized how the GES and the government were unable to finish equipping every teacher with a laptop.
