With effect from Thursday, October 13, 2022, the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Unions Congress (TUC) has announced its decision to join the planned strike by labor unions at the various Public Universities across the nation.
In a statement, TEWU also advised all of its members to “stay calm and wait on leadership for directions regarding its choice to join in.”
The statement said, “We hope that the employer and all stakeholders in tertiary education in Ghana will ensure a reversal of the decision that tries to adversely affect the Conditions of Service of Public University Workers in Ghana.
The government was given a week by the labor unions at the country’s public institutions to change a directive that would adversely affect university employees’ terms of employment.
This came after a press conference held on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at the University of Professional Studies in Accra by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU), Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Ghana Association of University Administration (GAUA) (UPSA).
The four unions declared in a statement: “After additional discussion among the National Leaders, we write to communicate that the planned strike action of all labor unions in Ghana’s public institutions will begin on Thursday, October 13, 2022.”
