The planned industrial action that was supposed to start on August 9th, 2024, has been canceled by the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG).

This decision comes after the government stepped in to help its members get the higher increase in the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA). According to their agreed-upon terms of service, the unions see this as a positive step towards justice and equity.

“We are satisfied that the VMA has been restored to our members, and we believe that this decision demonstrates a willingness to work with us to resolve all outstanding issues,” the unions said in a statement.

In contrast, the unions petitioned the government to remove the qualifying requirement and apply the adjustment to all categories of senior staff at Ghana’s public universities. “We believe that all members of our esteemed Association commute to work to perform their official duties for the collective advancement of Public Universities in Ghana. It is only fair that all members benefit from this adjustment, regardless of their rank,” they said.

All unresolved concerns impacting their working conditions will be addressed, the unions promised their members, by continuing to engage with the government and other parties. Their statement said, “We are committed to working to build a better future for Ghana’s public universities.”
