National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has made a demand that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) posters be taken away from equipment utilized in the District Road Improvement Program (DRIP).
According to Mr. Mahama, the NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia permitted the party’s parliamentary candidates to use DRIP equipment for political advertising.
Speaking at a gathering at Yeji, Pru East District, Bono East Region, Mr. Mahama denounced the use of DRIP equipment procured with public funds for political goals.
“It’s the government’s money, funded by the taxes we all pay, whether you’re NPP, CPP, Christian, or Muslim, everyone contributes. They’ve used those taxes to import earth-moving equipment for road construction, and each district has been allocated some. But now, we’re seeing posters of NPP parliamentary candidates on the DRIP equipment,” Mr. Mahama said.
He emphasized that the equipment is owned by all Ghanaians and should not be utilized for political campaigns, since it has been distributed to all 275 constituencies.
Mr. Mahama urged Dr. Bawumia and President Akufo-Addo to acknowledge that it is their responsibility to serve the country as a whole, not simply their party.
If the posters were not taken down right once, he threatened to take additional action on behalf of the NDC.
“I want to remind Akufo-Addo and Bawumia that they serve the entire country, not just the NPP. The equipment doesn’t belong to the party; it belongs to all Ghanaians,” he said.
