John Dramani Mahama, a former president of Ghana and the leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), called the decision made by the present government to provide allowances to teachers and nurses a “419 scam.”
He claims that although the government has reinstated allowances, it is having financial difficulties, which might have been prevented.
According to Mahama, the administration ought to have prioritized expanding access to teacher training and nursing programs.
“We know the problems with trainee nurses, and that is why when we were in government, we said we were going to substitute your allowances with the student loan. That is because we wanted to create more employment for you. The important thing is not the allowance but to get the job when you finish school. Somebody came and said he will pay the allowances, not knowing it was 419,” the former president said.
He chastised the present administration for not keeping its word, pointing out that several nurses had been without allowances for as long as thirty months.
In order to increase the number of jobs available to medical experts, Mr. Mahama also pledged to finish the Agenda 111 hospitals and resume hospital projects that the present administration had abandoned.
