The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has questioned the rationale behind the most recent increase in water and electricity rates, emphasizing that the move will further erode customers’ buying power.
On Saturday, September 28, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced an increase in water tariffs of 1.86% and an increase in electricity tariffs of 3.02% for the third quarter of 2024, with effect from October 1. The PURC attributed the upward adjustment to fluctuations in gas prices, inflation, and exchange rates.
Joseph Paddy, the GUTA public relations officer, lamented that the rise will lower Ghanaians’ level of living.
“The new tariff has no basis in logic. This [the increased tax] is a result of rising gas costs, as well as rising interest and currency rates. Why did the exchange rate increase? And this is the systemic instability that the fiscal committee has been griping about. Therefore, if they don’t return, the cost of living in Ghana will become exceedingly high and impossible for Ghanaians to afford.
Ghanaians have already voiced their complaints about the exorbitant cost of life in their nation. Furthermore, we are introducing this increment at this crucial juncture in conjunction with that. There are challenges with the time as well.
