The Majority Leader Afenyo-Markin has cautioned that the minority’s divisive politics would not succeed.

“The partisan politics they are infesting on us in the chamber must end, Parliament is a chamber for decent people, parliament is a chamber for tolerant democrats.”

In order to end the current parliamentary impasse, the majority caucus in Parliament has decided to speak with Speaker Alban Bagbin.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, November 6, Speaker Bagbin bemoaned the lack of communication from the Majority throughout the impasse. The absence of an official agenda from the Business Committee was cited as a reason for the adjournment of the House indefinitely on November 7.

The Majority called for the recall session to address important concerns, but their absence from the Chamber caused discussions to stall. Speaker Bagbin underlined that the House could not operate efficiently without committee input and a formal agenda.

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin told reporters on November 7 that his caucus is ready to work with the Speaker to find a solution. He also expressed hope for a successful conclusion, saying that in the event that negotiations were unsuccessful, they would rely on the law.

“We look forward to engaging Mr Speaker, in the few hours and days. We pray that he does the needful. If he doesn’t do the needful, we will continue to rely on the law to get the right things done.”

This latest adjournment follows weeks of legislative procedures that have been impacted by ongoing tensions between the Majority and Minority caucuses over whose side holds the majority in the House.

The legislative agenda for this session is in flux because it is unclear when Parliament will meet again to discuss the matters that have stalled due to the extended postponement.
