“The people of Ablekuma North deserve representation in Parliament” – GBA to EC

Nearly five months after the general elections in 2024, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) is urging swift action to end the protracted ambiguity surrounding the parliamentary elections in Ablekuma North.

The Association raised serious concerns about what it refers Ghana as a “democratic deficit” in the constituency in a strongly worded resolution adopted at its 2025 Mid-Year Conference, which was held in Accra. It pointed out that the Electoral Commission (EC) has not yet announced a winner, even though voters cast their ballots on December 7, 2024.

“The people of Ablekuma North deserve representation in Parliament,” the GBA stated. “Their right to political participation cannot be indefinitely suspended.”

In order to finish the results collation and formally announce the election’s result, the Bar Association requested the EC, the Ghana Police Service, and the 2024 Election Security Task Force to take “immediate and necessary steps.”

Particularly since Parliament continues its legislative work without the full complement of elected lawmakers, the standoff has sparked constitutional concerns. Additionally, some civil society organizations have demanded more openness regarding the factors that caused the collation process to be delayed.

The GBA’s action is probably going to put further pressure on the EC to provide an explanation for the silence and rebuild trust in the nation’s election procedures.

The GBA’s statement has not yet received a response from the Electoral Commission.
