‘The previous SIM registration did not benefit Ghanaians, it was largely ineffective’ – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has supported the initiative for a new SIM card re-registration, calling the earlier procedure ineffective and not credible.

While addressing the Resetting Ghana tour in Sunyani in the Bono Region on Thursday, March 19, the President remarked that the previous registration effort was unsuccessful in yielding significant outcomes, despite the difficulties it created for the public.

He blamed the failures of the earlier exercise on inadequate collaboration among vital institutions, particularly the Ministry of Communications and the National Identification Authority, which, in his view, hindered attempts to effectively associate SIM cards with confirmed national identity data.

‘If you recall, we were asked to re-register our SIM cards, and the process was very challenging. There was a disconnect between the authorities responsible, and in the end, it did not benefit Ghanaians. It was largely ineffective,’ he said.

President Mahama stated that the forthcoming re-registration will be completely linked to the Ghana Card to guarantee the accurate identification of SIM card users.

He stated that the new system will enable people to modify their registration information without having to wait in line at registration centers.

His comments come after the National Communications Authority disclosed that an audit of SIM registration records from 2021 to 2023 revealed no fingerprint matches when compared to the national identity database, sparking worries about the reliability of the current system.
