The Electoral Commission (EC) has denied charges of partisanship in its recruitment procedure of returning officers and has contested claims made by former President John Mahama over the employment of election officials.
The EC emphasized in a press release that the process of choosing returning officers and their deputies was carried out in an open, equitable, and transparent manner.
The EC claims that after the job posting for these roles appeared in the Daily Graphic on Monday, February 5, 2024, 20,561 applications were received.
After that, an internal committee was established to identify qualified individuals for interviews; all selected candidates had to have worked for the Commission for at least eight years as Temporal Election Officials.
“The allegation by former President Mahama that Ministers and DCEs were asked ‘to write the names of party apparatchiks and present them so that they would be appointed as the returning officers’ IS NOT TRUE,” the statement clarified.
“The Commission rejects this unfounded allegation coming from the former President,” the EC emphasised.
During this election year, the EC asked all parties involved to give out information with responsibility and accuracy.
As a Commission, we reaffirm our commitment to organizing free, fair, and transparent elections while respecting the highest standards of integrity, the EC declared.
The EC released a statement in reaction to Mr. Mahama’s accusations that the government was using the Commission for political purposes during an interview at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
