President John Dramani Mahama has justified the removal of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy), calling it a calculated step to improve Ghana’s digital financial services.
Officially eliminated on April 2, 2025, the E-levy levied a 1% tax on transactions made via digital or electronic channels.
The charge was a substantial source of funding for the government, according to some critics of the decision, but President Mahama stressed that the action would assist increase public access to services.
On Wednesday, April 8, he spoke at the Czech-Ghana Business Cooperation Seminar, which was hosted at the Mövenpick Hotel.
“In financial and digital services, Ghana is undergoing a rapid digital transformation. The recent repeal of the e-levy on electronic transactions, among other taxes, promises further growth and inclusion in digital financial services,” President Mahama said.
