The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared that from tomorrow, Friday, November 3, to next Tuesday, November 7, all 38,622 polling places nationwide will exhibit the provisional voters register concurrently.
According to the EC, the exercise will take place daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to allow eligible voters to verify their information in the 2020 and 2023 voter registrations, which will be available at the various polling places rather than the EC’s district offices.
The exhibition exercise’s goal is to give potential voters the chance to confirm the information that was collected during the limited registration process—such as name, age, and sex—and to seek additions or modifications as needed.
These were revealed yesterday at a press conference on the display of the voter registration in Accra by Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairperson of the EC responsible for Operations.
It was a part of the “Let the citizens know” series, which aimed to inform voters about the procedures involved in obtaining a legitimate voter registration for the general election of 2024.
“The purpose is to update you on the impending exhibition of the voters register,” he continued.
In the course of preparing for the District Level Elections (DLE) scheduled for Tuesday, December 19, 2023, the Commission intends to exhibit the provisional voter registration at all polling places across the nation.
Mr. Tettey stated that the following requests could be made at the polling place or exhibition center: adding names that were left out, objecting to the names of voters who are not eligible to vote, removing names of voters who have passed away from the voter registration, replacing voter ID cards that are of poor quality or damage, correcting names spelled incorrectly, correcting registration center codes that are incorrect, and changing other registration information, such as age or sex, due to clerical errors.
He noted that the voters register available at the show centers and request forms might be used to make demands.
He clarified that these forms would be processed by the district offices after the display activity.
According to Mr. Tettey, district registration review officers—district court magistrates—had been assigned to each of the EC’s 268 district offices to handle the provisional voter register and other forms that contained grievances and objections voiced by voters throughout the exhibition process.
According to him, “they would make a determination on each of the cases and endorse each page of the register to authenticate it” .
In order to confirm their information and speed up the process of verifying it, the deputy chairperson recommended voters to visit the exhibition centers with their voter ID cards.
Nevertheless, he pointed out that registered voters who forgot to bring their voter ID cards could still confirm their information, emphasizing that “it is also permitted to confirm the voter information of a relative or friend, but it must be noted that one cannot request corrections in the absence of the voter ID card owner.
“The voter must go to the district office of the EC for a biometric authentication of the voter before the change is effected to effect a complete change of the name of a voter or addition of new names, changing of polling station code, change of photographs, and inclusion of omitted names,” Mr. Tettey stated.
