Thomas Nyarko Ampem, the deputy finance minister nominee, has denied rumors that the government is covertly thinking of repealing the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
When questioned on Monday, February 24, during his parliamentary vetting, Mr. Ampem vehemently denied the rumors.
“I am not aware of any subtle intention to cancel free SHS,” he declared, stressing that his full support would remain with the Minister of Finance in ensuring adequate funding for the country’s education system.
Mr. Ampem also emphasized that his commitment is based on the Ghanaian people’s consensus, even if he is still receptive to the results of the ongoing education conference.
“As to the outcome of the education forum, if Ghanaians have consensus on a particular direction and it becomes government policy, I will support it in any way,” he said.

The Deputy Minister also restated a crucial pledge made by President John Mahama, who promised the country during his statewide campaign that the Free SHS concept would not be abandoned.
Mr. Ampem reaffirmed his optimism that the program will not be altered, saying, “President Mahama gave Ghanaians the assurance that he will not cancel free SHS, and I know he is a man of his words.”
