Former President John Dramani Mahama, the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been called a “failed president” by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who attributes his failure to win a second term to his incompetent economic management.
At a gathering with professional associations in Kumasi on Sunday, November 24, President Akufo-Addo blamed Mr. Mahama’s loss in the 2016 elections on his poor economic management, which caused the Ghanaian people to suffer greatly.
The President clarified that the economic hardships Ghanaians endured under Mr. Mahama’s rule were the reason why they had rejected him in 2016.
He advised voters not to give Mr. Mahama another shot at the presidency, claiming that his first term had not instilled faith in his capacity for leadership.
The NDC’s plan to establish a 24-hour economy was also criticized by President Akufo-Addo, who said it was unrealistic.
He said that the administration found it difficult to maintain a steady power supply for even 12 hours throughout Mr. Mahama’s tenure in office, making the notion of a 24-hour economy impractical.
These statements coincide with the NPP and NDC stepping up their campaigns in anticipation of the elections in December 2024.
The President further emphasized the economic difficulties during Mr. Mahama’s leadership, pointing out that in 2016, when there were no international crises to impact the nation, Ghana’s GDP growth rate was only 3.4%, the lowest in more than ten years.
“Mahama speaks as though he is a new figure in Ghanaian politics, but there is nothing new about him. He has been around for as long as I have, and many Ghanaians remember his record” he added.
