The New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also called Wontumi, has acknowledged that his bank accounts have been frozen for reasons he does not know.
All accounts associated with Chairman Wontumi and his business, Akonta Mining, were purportedly frozen by the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) in April 2025 due to purported financial irregularities.
Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), which gives the FIC the authority to impose restrictions on access to financial accounts when there is a reasonable suspicion of unlawful activity, is reportedly the rationale for the freeze.
Chairman Wontumi disclosed during his appearance on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show that his personal and business accounts had been stopped without warning.
He said that he was unaware of the freeze until he went to the bank to take out cash for personal expenditures and his kids’ tuition.
“What exactly is my offence? They froze all the accounts without any official communication. I went to the bank for a transaction and was told they have been issued a letter that I couldn’t be given money,” Wontumi said.
