The forthcoming elections in December should be held with integrity, fairness, and transparency, according to Ghana Bar Association (GBA) President Efua Ghartey.
During her swearing-in ceremony with the newly appointed GBA executives, Mrs. Ghartey emphasized the vital role that lawyers play in maintaining democratic values during election seasons.
“This election should be handled in a transparent, free and fair manner,” she said.
She also praised attorneys for their efforts to educate the public on election-related issues, pointing out that this has been made possible in part by their handling of well-known court cases.
She pointed to the importance of the Supreme Court’s hearings on televised election petitions in 2013 and 2021, which served to educate the public about the legal system and rulings pertaining to electoral issues.
The president of the GBA also recognized the critical role that the media play in promoting openness in the legal system, improving public access to information, and offering thorough coverage of court proceedings.
Mrs. Ghartey also exhorted attorneys to continue their dedication to environmental preservation.
She said she was certain that the combined efforts of legal experts might result in significant advancements in the protection of Ghana’s natural resources.
“Our collective effort will definitely yield results as we remain resolute in our resolve not to shortchange ourselves where our environment is concerned,” Mrs Ghartey added.
