About eight opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ashanti regional executives have been invited by the Ashanti Regional Police Command to participate in “Green Army” campaigning.
As a result of their use of military camouflage for political party operations last week during former president John Mahama’s campaign swing in the area, the eight are scheduled to appear before the Police command on Monday.
First Vice Chairman of the party, Captain retired Kwame Jabari, confirmed the invitation on Kumasi-based Abusua FM and stated that they are getting ready to meet with the regional police commander to discuss the usage of the uniform.
“The camouflage was purchased in Kumasi Kejetia Market, which does not bear any Ghana Armed Forces military insignia to justify this pointless invitation. The NPP members have all been wearing camouflage, including their antinational organizer and youth organizer Nana Boakye, so why not us?, Mr. Jabari questioned.
He claims that despite no wrongdoing, the Party will not cower under military and police pressure in the Ashanti region.
“They call us on the phone for a meeting after 9am; we will now convene as a group to decide whether or not to accept the invitation that has been made to us. Using our guiding principle, we will determine whether or not the invitation constitutes intimidation. If we believe it to be intimidation, we won’t honor it; if not, we must.
“Why didn’t the police invite us instead of them? We have dozens of photos of NPP national and regional executives, including their allegedly disbanded vigilante group who dress in military camouflage for their party activities. So, we interpret this police invitation as selective justice being pushed by an unidentified group of individuals. I think the NPP regional executives are using intimidation because they are worried about my current position in the NDC and how I plan to restructure the party. But, they have made a serious error. It won’t function. He emphasized, “I can’t be intimidated.
