Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State in the Volta Region, has made a petition for compensation for the localities impacted by the overflow from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.

The goal of Togbe Afede’s request for compensation is to lessen the losses suffered by the affected residents, including their homes and means of subsistence.

The Agbogbomefia emphasized that the spillage, which the Volta River Authority (VRA) should have prevented, has caused the villages to suffer considerable losses.

He pointed out that simply warning people about a spill is insufficient, especially when locals have not experienced such events in a long time. The demand for compensation follows from the realization that those impacted could not have foreseen the unexpected flooding of their homes.

On Saturday, October 21, 2023, Togbe Afede XIV issued the appeal after visiting the afflicted areas in the three Tongu Districts.

He visited the victims and offered his sympathies for their losses.

He emphasized the need for a more controlled response to the leakage that takes the populations downstream into account.

He also stressed the need for accountability, indicating that: “some kind of responsibility must be accepted, and the people must be compensated for the loss of properties, livelihoods, and more than mere relief items can address.”

Togbe Afede XIV visited with the chiefs of the impacted communities as part of his tour to encourage them and reassure them that they were not fighting alone.

On behalf of the Asogli State, he made a donation of GHS 100,000 to lessen the pain of the impacted people.

Members of Parliament (MPs), Wisdom Kobena Woyome and Alex Gabby Hotordze, representing the South Tongu and Central Tongu Constituencies, respectively, accepted the donation. Togbe Kwasinyi Kakaklolo Agyeman V, the Chief (Dufia) of Adidome, and other elders from the Central Tongu District were also there to accept the donation.

Togbe Kakaklolo V proposed the creation of a National Disaster Management Fund to assist the riverine villages that have made sacrifices over the years for the construction of dams, which provide Ghana with electricity, as a way of thanking Togbe Afede for his thoughtful gift.

About 10 districts in the Volta Region have been affected by the Akosombo and Kpong dam leakage, which started on September 15, 2023. As a result, at least 31,000 people have been forced to leave their homes.

Chiefs, queens, and senior members of the Asogli State Council accompanied Togbe Afede XIV during his visit.
