On Saturday, May 25, 2025, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) announced that all transportation fares would be reduced by 15% nationwide.
Following a fruitful discussion on Monday, May 19, 2025, between the GPRTU National Executive and Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister of Transport, the decision was made.
The GPRTU Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abbas Ibrahim Moro, verified the rate change and attributed it to the recent 18% decrease in gasoline prices.
“In line with our commitment to fair pricing, we have agreed to reduce transport fares by 15% starting this Saturday.
While our standard practice is to adjust fares by one-third of any fuel price reduction, we have opted for this larger cut to further alleviate the financial strain on passengers,” Mr. Moro disclosed in an interview.
In response to the better economic conditions, he further pushed other industries, especially the spare parts business, to follow suit and cut their prices.
“We made this reduction without waiting for other operating expenses to go down. Supporting the government’s initiatives to lower the cost of living for Ghanaians is our top priority,” he stated.
Union members received a severe warning from Mr. Moro, who emphasized that failure to comply with the new fare structure would lead to disciplinary action.
“Once the union has taken this decision, all members are obligated to comply without exception,” he said.
