True democracy goes beyond elections; it should improve governance – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the former president of the nation, has urged the populace to fulfill their civic duties in order to preserve democracy.

He also urged them to exercise extra caution as the country got ready for this year’s general election in December.

That would stop systemic abuses and guarantee that the people’s decision was the only one that mattered, according to Mr. Mahama.

The former president also urged all duty-bearers to uphold constitutional values in a statement commemorating the 1992 Constitution’s 32nd anniversary.

Despite its imperfections, he claimed that democratic governance had helped the nation and provided hope for long-term progress.

Therefore, according to Mr. Mahama, the anniversary should provide a chance for citizens to consider the areas in which their nation has failed and how it can build on the progress that has been made.

Mr. Mahama, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer for 2024, expressed regret over the legal barriers that prevented the Constitution Review Implementation Committee from putting the commission’s recommendations into practice in the Government White Paper.

If elected president in December 2024, he promised to “focus on strengthening governance institutions, protect citizens’ rights, and fight corruption” and to carry out the various processes towards implementing the white paper.

“True democracy goes beyond elections; it should improve governance, enhance individual freedoms, and, most important, ensure a decent quality of life for citizens,” he added.

“The reforms will aim to reduce the influence of an overreaching executive, put an end to the creeping politicisation of state institutions, reduce excessive spending on Article 71 officeholders to bridge the unacceptable disparity between them and other categories of workers and strengthen the fundamental rights of all citizens,” Mr Mahama added.
