The Trades Union Congress Ghana (TUC) has denounced the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah’s decision to revoke any appointments and recruitment made after December 7, 2024.

TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah called the directive “very problematic” and prone to misuse in a news release provided to Metro TV.

The union contends that the action violates good governance norms and procedures in addition to being unjust to individuals impacted.

The revocation has resulted in mass terminations, including appointments made before to December 7, 2024, TUC stated in the statement.

According to him, several people who had their appointments regularized in December 2024 after being on contract for more than five years have lost their jobs.

As a result, TUC Secretary General Joshua Ansah urged President John Dramani Mahama to step in and halt the current firings.

He cautioned that mass layoffs can be disastrous and damage Ghana’s democratic reputation, especially for young Ghanaians like teachers and nurses.

The union also attacked the directive’s partisan nature, citing similar moves taken by the then-incoming administration in 2017 that were denounced by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Similar to the amnesty given to those hired by the previous administration who are currently receiving training with security agencies, he urged President Mahama to provide amnesty to all appointments made by the previous administration.
