Nana Adyei Amoako Gyampa II, the chief of Okyerekrom in the Akrofuom district of the Ashanti region, has expressed concern over the condition of an abandoned hole that Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi had dug for their mining operations.

After the pit collapsed in 2012, posing a threat to residents who had their farm fields nearby, the chief claims that AGA has turned a deaf ear.

The community is concerned about the abandoned mining pit, which has claimed 10 lives since 2012.

The community has been purposefully excluded by AGA from accessing the community trust fund that the mining company established to serve the community within the mining enclave, according to Nana Amoako Gyampa ll.

“I want to ask a question if AGA came here to do mining or galamsey, the government must make it clear to us,” Nana Amoako Gyampa revealed.

The Okyerekrom chief Nana Amoako gave AngloGold Ashanti a two-week deadline to retake the hole or face their wrath while speaking to a press conference.

Residents whose relatives have so far perished in the hole spoke to the media about their experience.
