Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate and former vice president, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to prevent state security forces from being used as tools of political persecution.
This comes after National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) agents failed to apprehend Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, at his home on Wednesday.
Dr. Bawumia denounced the attempted arrest as a “unfortunate political persecution” in a statement following his visit with Rev. Fordjour.
He claimed that despite the event, the MP was in a good mood. “Rev. Fordjour was cheerful and unfazed.
Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed his plea to President Mahama, demanding him to immediately bring his security forces under control. “I charge all Party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution,” he said.
“I wish to reiterate my earlier submission to the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, to immediately rein in his security operatives.
The security institutions of our country must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents,” he warned.
He added that Ghanaians will not put up with a return to a culture of fear and capricious behavior by government organizations.
“Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear,” Dr Bawumia declared, reinforcing the NPP’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and political tolerance.
