Unpaid allowances causing financial hardship – NSS personnel

The non-payment of monthly allowances for the past three months has posed a significant challenge for National Service Personnel (NSP) employed in the public sector in meeting their basic needs.

The National Service Secretariat (NSS) had previously promised prompt payments, but the erratic payment schedule has left those impacted feeling increasingly irritated and angry.

Many NSPs voiced serious concerns about how the delayed allowances would negatively affect their day-to-day activities.

“I’m being severely impacted by the delay in my NSS allowance. Every day, I spend GH¢45 on transportation to get to work and return home. We occasionally run out of money for food, which leaves us in a precarious situation where we have to turn to others for assistance,” one NSP said.

According to a report, the NSS has three times since January altered the payment date; the causes of the delays are still unknown.

National Service member Benjamin expressed his worries, pointing out that some people depend on their grandparents for daily financial support.

“The government has refused to pay us for more than three months. Some of us rely on our grandparents on a daily basis.”

Nonetheless, a National Service Secretariat statement claimed that service members’ failure to turn in their verification slips on time was the reason for the payment delay.
