The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has declared that on October 29, 2024, it would put an end to its anti-galamsey strike.
They informed Ghanaians about their industrial action in a statement issued on Thursday, October 24, 2024, saying that their decision was made following extensive discussions with the National Executive Committee (NEC) and that their members’ approval is still pending.
UTAG’s strike showed their dedication to preserving the environment for current and future generations, according to the statement, which was signed by National President Professor Mamudu A. Akudugu.
“Our strike action has demonstrated significantly throughout the country our commitment to protecting and sustaining the environment for present and future generations. We have won the admiration and confidence of the Ghanaian people in us to always stand up for the welfare of our country.
“In light of these, the NEC, after thorough deliberations, has directed that the strike action be suspended effective Tuesday, October 29, 2024, and is seeking members’ affirmation or otherwise of this directive,” parts of the statement read.
“Discussions with various stakeholders regarding the signing of a Pact for Candidates in the 2024 Presidential Election, one of their key demands, have begun,” UTAG said, highlighting one of the requests that led to their strike action.
The government’s alleged inactivity on illicit mining (galamsey), which has negatively harmed river bodies and forest reserves, prompted UTAG to launch the strike action on October 10, 2024.
In order to compel the government to take decisive action against the galamsey threat, members of the association from public universities set down their working tools.
