George Darko, a legendary musician and pioneer of “Burga highlife,” has passed on.
On March 20, 2024, a Wednesday, he supposedly passed away.
Mr. Darko, whose stool name was Nana Apem Darko I, was the Tufuhene of Akropong.
In addition, he was a composer, songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist who appeared in the music industry in the late 1960s.
During the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, George Darko gained popularity. His songs, such as “Akoo te brofo,” “Odo Colour,” and “Masem Nie,” are among the most timeless and lasting highlife recordings in Ghanaian music circles.
The Ghanaian music industry is grieving over his passing, especially in light of the recent passing of KK Kabobo, another seasoned Highlife performer.
George Darko, a Ghanaian who was born in Akropong in the Eastern Region, was highly regarded for his extraordinary guitar and vocal skills, which revolutionized Highlife music in the early 1980s.
The singer of the famous song “Akoo Te Brofo” got his start in music when he was young and started learning traditional drumming and dance. But it was a chance meeting with an instructor who made his own guitar that ignited Darko’s love of the stringed instrument.
Drawing inspiration from the sounds of iconic Western bands like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix, Darko who is also Tufuhene of Akropong incorporated modern sensibilities into the extensive repertoire of Highlife music under the stool name Nana Apem Darko I.
