Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, left the proceedings during the vetting of Attorney General-designate Dr. Dominic Ayine before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, causing drama.

Suame MP John Darko’s inquiry about a possible conflict of interest involving Dr. Ayine’s legal practice set off the incident on Monday, January 13.

Mr. Darko insisted on bringing up the matter again, even though the Chairman thinks the nominee has already addressed it.

But after a contentious debate, Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor declared the question out of order.

Mr. Darko claimed that the Chairman was being unjust by stifling his inquiries.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin, the Committee’s Ranking Member, took Mr. Darko’s side and charged the Chairman of prejudice against NPP members.

“Chairman, with the greatest respect, I have observed consistently the way you go at my members, especially the young ones, the new ones, it’s not the right way. I’ve been quiet watching, and I will just be pinching you ‘Mr chairman. Please take it easy. Take it easy’ but the way it is going, It is not too right,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

When the Chairman refused to change his mind, tensions increased, and Mr. Afenyo-Markin and a few other NPP committee members left the meeting in protest.
