John Dramani Mahama, a former president and the candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress, claims that it looks like the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) uses violence during elections as a matter of course.
The former President made his remarks immediately after the NPP completed its supper delegate election, which was used to choose five candidates out of ten potential candidates for the position of party flag bearer.
On Saturday, August 26, 2023, the country-wide super delegate election was held by the ruling party.
An representative for one of the ten candidates, Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, reportedly suffered a beating at the North-East voting location, which required the victim to be hospitalized.
On social media, the former president responded to the situation by saying, “Acts of volition during what should be a peaceful civic process must be condemned by all well-meaning Ghanaians. Such heinous deeds have no place in today’s society, especially when they take place during a party-internal debate amongst people who have known each other for a long time.
He added, “The barbarity of Ayawaso West Wuogon in 2019 and the murder of eight innocent Ghanaians during the 2020 elections will forever be a blot on the legacy of President Akufo-Addo and VP Mahamudu Bawumia.”

Brutalizing opponents in an election has no place in modern society, especially among members of the same party. Ayawaso West Wuogon in 2019 and the murder of 8 innocent citizens in 2020 remain a stain on the legacy of @NAkufoAddo and @MBawumia

Violence has become the new normal for the NPP. Acts of volence during what should be a peaceful civic exercise must be condemned by all well-meaning Ghanaians. More so, in an internal contest involving persons who belong to the same party.
