A significant fumigation and disinfection operation has been started by the Volta River Authority (VRA) in the villages impacted by the Akosombo Dam’s controlled spill. The pace of spillage has been significantly decreased, leading to a notable decrease in the levels of floodwaters.
Given that Mepe in the Volta Region’s North Tongu District has the greatest population of afflicted individuals, the disinfection operation has started there.
Ing. Kwame Osei Mensah Darkwa, the VRA’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, emphasized the organization’s dedication to guaranteeing the safety and habitability of residences, public areas, and the community as a whole after the floods.
“The VRA contracted Zoomlion to carry out fumigation and decontamination exercises in the areas where the water has receded significantly to make it safe for habitation again. So essentially we have the assembly represented by the safety officer, a representative from the traditional council, a Chief Executive and the intention is to go to the areas we’ve inspected and we want them to be dry for them to start some form of decontamination of the place.’
When asked if fumigation would be applied to all other districts impacted by the flooding, Ing. Dankwa responded, “Of course, when it becomes necessary.” We are investigating it, and our goal for today is to deal with the Mepe area.
Divine Osborne Fenu, the District Chief Executive of the North Tongu Assembly, praised the VRA for its timely cleaning operation. He is satisfied with Authority’s prompt and reliable response to the victims’ predicament.
But before going back to their houses, he advised the locals to wait until the fumigation process was finished.
