For their involvement in illicit mining activities in Kadadwen, Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, fifty-six people have been taken into custody and turned over to the Western Regional Police Command.
The Western Regional Security Council launched the crackdown as part of a deliberate campaign to stop illegal mining, or galamsey, which has a terrible effect on the environment and local communities. Police, Second Infantry Battalion, and Western Naval Command personnel carried it out on Thursday, March 13, 2025.
About 25 changfang machines were confiscated and destroyed in addition to the arrests. Additionally taken were three motorbikes, nine pumping machines, three excavators, and three payloaders from the Mpohor District and Ahanta West Municipality.
47 men and 9 women from Kadadwen in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality were arrested as a result of the operation, which targeted illegal miners in particular regions, such as Site Six of Ghana Rubber Company Ltd., North Palm Oil Plantation, Kada Dwen, and portions of the Mpohor District.
The National Liaison Officer in charge of the operation, Brigadier General Musa Whajah, voiced worries about the destructive effects of illicit mining and promised to take action. Security personnel also set fire to 25 Changfang machines and confiscated other equipment.
“We made some arrests during today’s operation. This time, we’re taking a different approach. The suspects will be screened by the police, and those found culpable will be put before the court,” he stated.
In a different operation, on Wednesday, March 12, a joint Rapid Response Team from the Forestry Commission’s Tarkwa and Takoradi Forest District picked up three tricycles and seven motorcycles from the Subri Forest Reserve and detained eight illegal miners.
For additional investigation, all suspects have been turned over to the Western Regional Police Command.
