Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group who incited a mutiny against the Russian army in June, was aboard the aircraft that crashed outside of Moscow, according to Russian police.
According to Russia’s emergency circumstances ministry, all 10 passengers on board died.
10 passengers have reportedly perished after a private jet crashed north of Moscow, according to the authorities.
The ministry reported a “private Embraer Legacy 600 aircraft traveling from Moscow to Saint Petersburg crashed” about 17:00 GMT.
Three crew members were listed as being among the ten passengers. Eight bodies, according to the officials, have been discovered.
The Federal Agency for Air Transport of Russia has announced the creation of a “specially created commission” to look into the disaster.
The Wagner leader was reportedly killed, according to a Telegram channel that is thought to be connected to Prigozhin.
At 6:11 p.m. (15:11 GMT), the Embraer Legacy (plane number RA-02795) disappeared from the FlightRadar24 web tracker.
A second private jet connected to Prigozhin that looked to be flying in the same direction as the crashed plane—St. Petersburg—turned around and arrived in Moscow shortly after the first one.
After Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Prigozhin, 62, gained notoriety for leading the Russian attack on the city of Bakhmut in the longest and deadliest fighting of the conflict with the aid of thousands of prisoners he recruited from prison.
Prigozhin engaged in a social media spat with Russia’s military establishment, accusing it of ineptitude and even treason while praising Wagner’s accomplishments.
In June, Prigozhin organized a rebellion during which Wagner fighters seized Rostov-on-Don in the south and downed several military chopper as they headed towards Moscow, killing their pilots in the process.
President Vladimir Putin referred to it as a treasonous act that will be met with a severe retaliation.
In an agreement, the Kremlin stated that Prigozhin and some of his warriors would depart for Belarus in order to prevent bloodshed, and a criminal case against him for armed mutiny would be abandoned.
Implementation of the agreement and Prigozhin’s future have been the subject of confusion.
