In preparation for the impending rain, Wassa Akropong’s main storm drains are being dredged by Hon. Nicholas Amankwah, the Member of Parliament for the Wassa Amenfi East constituency.
A variety of activities, including the disposal of both biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste into the drain and the use of the drain as a convenient location, have contributed to the heavy clogging of the drains. This has led to the growth of various plants and shrubs that obstruct the free passage of water.
The Adankasa Ridge river, which flows behind Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area Palace and crosses Angola Annex as well as a few flood-prone drains in the vicinity, is currently being dredged by an excavator that the Wassa Amenfi East MP hired.
This exercise, which is being carried out by the member of Parliament, is one of the steps being taken to keep the capital’s drainage systems from becoming clogged during the season.
Recall that in June 2023, a number of people living in flooded areas of Wassa Amenfi East protested against the constant flooding in Wassa Akropong, the municipal capital of Amenfi East in the Western Region, which was destroying their homes and means of subsistence.
Due to the devastation caused by the flood, the MP visited the affected areas, which included Farmers, Akropong-China Market, and Christ Apostolic Church, in order to show his solidarity with them.
Thus, Nicholas Amankwah has pledged to make several interventions to prevent flooding in his constituency as part of efforts to avert potential disasters this year.
The MP who is affectionately called Home Boy told the media on Tuesday that some of his interventions included the clearing of some major drains in Wassa Amenfi of silt and public education on good sanitation practices.
He was therefore hopeful that his intervention would significantly reduce the impact havoc caused by rains in the community.
He said, his office was very determined to make the municipality safe for residents and visitors and ensure that no innocent soul or property is lost.
Meanwhile, addressing some community members, the Amenfi East MP has advised them to take sanitation around their homes and the principal street of Akropong seriously.
He said, being healthy is the greatest thing any individual or country will aspire to have and pleaded with his constituents and Ghanaians at large to see cleaning their environment as an obligation.
