Claims that the Electoral Commission (EC) is working for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been refuted.
The NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, and the party itself have accused the EC of trying to conspire with the NPP to rig the general elections on December 7th, following the EC’s decision to bar political party agents from witnessing the voter transfer exercise due to violent clashes at some centers.
The EC changed its decision to forbid political party agents from seeing the vote transfer process following multiple meetings and discussions.
The Electoral Commission emphasized in a statement that concerns to national security resulting from political party agents’ activities at their district offices were the reason behind the mandate to remove agents from the transfer exercise.
The commission stated that their choice was not made to avoid criticism of its work or to advance the goals of a specific political party.
The public was reassured by the election management body that it is dedicated to the values of openness and equity. It reaffirmed that accountability and openness are the cornerstones of its operations, which is why they decided to let the political parties watch the vote transfer procedure.
The public was urged by the EC to disregard claims made by some political parties that the commission is biased toward their agenda. “This is not true,” the statement stated emphatically.
The Electoral Commission stated that it makes choices free from partisanship, noting that these judgments are universal and affect all stakeholders and political parties.
